Welcome

After successfully concluding my Fulbright in Jamaica, it's on to the next step . . . graduate school. This blog will document my journey through the M.A./Ph.D. program in Anthropology and the path toward becoming a professional archaeologist. Forgive me as the posts will likely be sporadic and at times extraneous.

Quote of the Week #10

Just before I left Jamaica, a professor of mine gave me a small book of quotations by Haile Selassie as a going away present. While skimming through the book I found this quotation terse as well as inspirational:

"Let Us set our goals too high; let Us demand more of Ourselves than We believe We possess."

Recipe of the Week #10

The latest recipe I got from living in Jamaica was for one of my favorite drinks: soursop juice. Made from the soursop fruit, this recipe follows the traditional recipe for many Jamaican drinks. All you need is the soursop (2), lime (3), sugar, and water. While peeling the soursop, you want to separate the black seeds from the body of fruit. In a blender simply add the fruit, squeeze in the limes and blend. Pour the contents through a strainer into a pitcher or bowl and add the water to get the consistency you want and the sugar to the taste you desire. Finally add ice and serve.
When selecting the soursop it is important to pick the fruit while it is mature and let it ripen for a day or two until it is soft. For those of you who haven't had soursop, the taste most closely resembles sour green apple candy. Although this recipe is very basic there are people who have their own recipes that involve mixing in vanilla and ginger.
